Metrics that matter
RTT measures the round trip, jitter captures variation and packet loss identifies missing traffic. Applications also add DNS, connection, TLS and processing time, so ping cannot replace an HTTP test.

A repeatable method
Run at least one hundred requests per origin, repeat at different hours and record date, ISP, location, protocol and sample size. Use ping for RTT, traceroute or mtr for routing and curl for HTTP timings.

Reading the result
A low median with a high 95th percentile indicates variability. Stable ping with slow HTTP points toward the application, TLS or storage. Time-dependent route changes can identify a bottleneck outside the server.

There is no universal threshold. Voice, gaming and remote desktops tolerate less delay than batch jobs. Compare the measurement with the application's requirement and a real-user baseline.
